Sony recalled thousands of its Vaio PCs worldwide over “a wiring problem” that might make “a small number of units” overheat, it said. About 73,000 units in the U.S. and 439,000 total are involved, a Sony spokesman said Thursday. “Irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating,” which “poses a burn hazard to consumers,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Sony has fielded 15 reports of overheating, including one involving a person with “a minor burn,” the commission said. Sony’s voluntary recall covers VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN- TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 series models. Sony said it will “perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a repair.” - JB
