Consumer Product Safety Commission sources confirm that CPSC has voted unanimously (5-0) to issue its first “15(j)” final rule. The rule will create a new “Substantial Product Hazard List” and name as the first product on the list any hand-supported hair dryer without certain integral immersion protection. Products placed on this new list must be immediately reported to CPSC, are subject to corrective action such as recalls, and will be refused admission into the U.S.

On May 6, 2011, a group of ten Representatives sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration expressing their deep concern about the continued use of formaldehyde-containing hair straighteners in the U.S. and asking FDA to take immediate action to protect workers and consumers. The letter cites complaints about acute reactions to Brazilian Blowout Solution and Acai Professional Smoothing Solution and testing which confirmed high levels of formaldehyde in both products. The Representatives ask FDA to issue a voluntary recall, conduct additional testing, and require warning labels on hair straighteners that contain formaldehyde.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with eight firms, has announced a voluntary recall of certain pool and spa drain covers due to incorrect ratings, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers. CPSC reminds the trade that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. It also urges consumers to stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The drain covers are manufactured in the U.S. and China.
