U.S. Customs and Border Protection has posted a report providing the results from the 2010 Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism cost/benefit survey that was prepared for the agency by the University of Virginia.
US Search, an online data broker, settled FTC charges that the company’s claims of protecting consumer records through a privacy service were deceptive. US Search began selling Privacy Lock in June 2009, the commission said Wednesday. It alleged that the $10 service but didn’t block a customer’s name “from showing up as an associate of someone else” in a search for that person’s name. The company also failed to prevent information from appearing in a reverse search of a customer’s phone number or address, the FTC said. The settlement bars US Search from “misrepresenting the effectiveness of their Privacy Lock Service” or any other service allowing customers to remove their information from search results.
