The federal Safe Connections Act of 2022 requires mobile service providers to separate the telecommunications lines of domestic violence and human trafficking survivors and their dependents from shared mobile service contracts upon receiving a line separation request. The FCC has passed rules for telecommunications companies to follow once a request has been received, including blocking records of text and calls, and is currently reviewing public comments with regard to potential additional rules required for connected car accounts.

FCC Comr. McDowell said he hopes public safety will make greater use of commercial technologies and networks. He was kicking off a 3G Americas symposium Wed. that included several demonstrations of ways that applications provided by wireless carriers help police, firefighters and other first responders. Public safety agencies have relied mainly on equipment and systems designed specifically for their use.
Last year was the worst year since 1961 for the number of space launches, and the forecast for the next half-decade is just as dismal, according to research firm Airclaims. There were only 54 orbital launches in 2004 -- including 12 commercial geostationary satellite liftoffs - - down from 63 in 2003 and 65 in 2002, the company said. Launch numbers have been sliding since the fall of the Soviet Union, which meant fewer “Cold War-induced” military launches. Last year, “many of the major players were affected by delays due to technical difficulties or satellite related delays,” said Airclaims Space Analyst David Todd.
