Samsung “emphasized its dedication to the success of CBRS and 5G, generally, in the United States,” a filing posted Thursday in docket 23-93 said. “The proposed device -- which has been before the Commission for over 700 days -- would simply enable operators to deploy one radio where they would otherwise deploy two radios with substantially similar performance characteristics,” Samsung said.

GCI CEO Ronald Duncan and others from the Alaskan carrier, in separate meetings with FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel and Commissioner Brendan Carr, urged that the agency approve the Alaska Connect Fund. GCI is deploying “5G where doing so makes sense -- typically in areas with fiber that are due for a radio network upgrade,” a filing posted Tuesday in docket 23-328 said. “Deploying 5G in these areas -- rather than the 4G LTE called for in GCI’s current Alaska Plan commitments -- provides a better experience for these Alaskans as well as a network that will last longer into the future,” GCI said.
Most of Paris seems “5G-ready” with the Olympic Games starting Friday, Ookla reported Tuesday. “Our analysis of Speedtest data across Paris shows that 5G is available in almost every corner of the city,” Ookla said. There are coverage gaps in or near the Montparnasse and Pere Lachaise cemeteries and in major parks, “but for the most part you’ll have a hard time finding an area where you cannot connect at all.”
The FCC Public Safety Bureau's report on the Feb. 22 nationwide outage of AT&T’s wireless network (see 2403040062) found procedural mistakes by the carrier. Released Monday, the report said the Enforcement Bureau could impose sanctions. Based on information from AT&T, the report said “all voice and 5G data services for all users of AT&T Mobility were unavailable as a result of the outage, affecting more than 125 million registered devices, blocking more than 92 million voice calls, and preventing more than 25,000 calls” to 911. The direct cause was “an error by an employee who misconfigured a single network element, ultimately causing the AT&T Mobility network to respond by entering Protection Mode and disconnecting all wireless devices,” the bureau said: “Adequate peer review should have prevented the network change from being approved, and, in turn, from being loaded onto the network. This peer review did not take place.” The report cited a lack of post-installation testing, inadequate lab testing and “insufficient safeguards and controls” on AT&T's part, as well as insufficient procedures for mitigating problems. It noted the company has “taken numerous steps to prevent a reoccurrence.” For instance, within two days of the outage, “AT&T implemented additional technical controls in its network,” the report found: “This included scanning the network for any network elements lacking the controls that would have prevented the outage, and promptly putting those controls in place. AT&T has engaged in ongoing forensic work and implemented additional enhancements to promote network robustness and resilience.” AT&T has "implemented changes to prevent what happened in February from occurring again," a spokesperson emailed: "We fell short of the standards that we hold ourselves to, and we regret that we failed to meet the expectations of our customers and the public safety community.”
Verizon lost 410,000 prepaid wireless customers tied to the end of the affordable connectivity program in Q2, the company said Monday as it became the first major wireless carrier to report earnings since the impact of ACP's demise could be measured. Overall prepaid customer losses were 624,000. But Verizon also gained a net 148,000 postpaid customers, which beat expectations. Revenue of $32.8 billion just missed consensus estimates. Though most numbers were positive, Verizon was down 6.08% to $39.09 for the day.
Competitive Carriers Association and Nex-Tech Wireless representatives met with an aide to FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez to discuss potential gaps in the agency’s broadband data collection, a filing posted Friday in docket 19-195 said. Nex-Tech discussed issues it saw as it collected data for the broadband maps. “In Kansas, the outdoor stationary 5G 7/1 Mbps mobile broadband layer of the most recent FCC national broadband map shows 63% of the state to be currently covered, whereas in-vehicle mobile coverage at 7/1 Mbps shows only 30% … covered,” the filing said: Even if the reported coverage were accurate, “this methodology would leave 70% of Kansas below even the 7/1 Mbps 5G bar for those using mobile phones while mobile.” The representatives warned about the implications “of overstated maps and a flawed challenge process” for “the success of the 5G Fund.”
Boost Mobile prepaid and Boost Infinite postpaid brands will be offered as Boost Mobile, EchoStar announced Wednesday. “Boost Mobile is now the only nationwide carrier with both prepaid and postpaid mobile services under one name because Boost believes how you pay is not a product,” EchoStar said. The company said it’s offering “simplified pricing” with unlimited plans starting at $25 a month, and is “kicking off a nationwide brand and advertising campaign.” EchoStar also offered a 30-day money-back guarantee allowing new customers to try Boost Mobile's 5G network “risk free.” EchoStar owns Dish Network, which obtained Boost Mobile from T-Mobile as part of an agreement with regulators allowing T-Mobile to buy Sprint (see 1911180038).

Verizon’s prepaid Total Wireless brand offered a customer promotion promising service at “less than $30 per month,” a rate locked in for five years. A customer would need four lines to get that price per line. A single line costs $50 monthly with unlimited data on Verizon’s 5G ultra-wideband network, a price that includes taxes and fees. Unveiled Thursday, the offer is for new customers. Total also unveiled a new logo.
