Bill Would Curb US Exports of Natural Gas

Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Yvette Clarke, both New York Democrats, introduced a bill this month to prohibit most U.S. exports of natural gas.

The lawmakers said that such exports need to be reduced because they raise domestic energy prices and fuel climate change. While their legislation would allow the president under certain conditions to exempt natural gas exports from the prohibition, an exemption could not take effect without Congress passing a joint resolution of approval.

The Lowering American Energy Costs Act was referred to the Senate Banking Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
