EU Parliament Pushes for Sanctions Against Tanzanian Officials, Iran
European Parliament members urged the EU last week to impose new sanctions on Tanzanian authorities for violence against protesters and on Iranian officials for the "systemic suppression and escalating persecution" of Iran’s Baha’i community.

Members voted 539-0, with 27 abstentions, to pass a resolution calling on EU ministers to consider sanctions against Tanzanian officials for violence against protesters after the country’s October elections, which led to "thousands of deaths and injuries." The EU should sanction officials "responsible" for these human rights violations, Parliament said.
Members also voted 549-7, with 31 abstentions, to impose sanctions on Iranian officials involved in the persecution of the Baha’is, Iran's largest non-Muslim religious minority, who are facing "harassment, detention, property confiscation and other fundamental rights violations." They also called on the bloc to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization and "extend EU sanctions to all those responsible for human rights violations."
