Groups Push for 'Responsible' Wireless Plan for National Mall
The Wireless Infrastructure Association urged the National Park Service last week to adopt a siting framework to encourage adoption of “responsible and sustainable wireless communications on the National Mall and surrounding area” while addressing “persistent service issues.” The NPS sought comments before the federal shutdown about its plan for the National Mall; they were due Thursday.

The association also asked the NPS to move quickly to adopt a plan. The National Mall is “one of the most visited national parks in the country and even normal visitation levels can put significant strain on mobile networks while high-attendance events can see substantial degradation in service, impacting visitor experience and potentially hampering public safety operations.”
The Greater Washington Board of Trade and Federal City Council, meanwhile, called for adoption of “clear, consistent permitting and design standards that enable wireless providers and infrastructure partners to deploy technology efficiently and responsibly, while adhering to preservation goals.” They emphasized the public implications, noting that first responders “rely on real-time data to coordinate responses efficiently across the vast and heavily visited public space.”
