AT&T Agrees to Modify Ad Claims About Free iPhone Offer
A panel of the Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Review Board recommended Thursday that AT&T change its advertising “to avoid conveying a false message regarding eligibility for an iPhone device offer.” The bureau’s National Advertising Division previously said AT&T should modify a claim that “everyone” can get an “iPhone 16 Pro on us” because the offer applies to specific plans only. Verizon brought the challenge.

The NARB panel “agreed with NAD’s conclusion that the challenged advertising, on its face, conveys a false message that everyone ‘gets’ a free phone and does not clarify the message by disclosing a material limitation to the offer of a free cell phone in a clear and conspicuous manner,” the decision said. NARB said AT&T agreed to comply with the decision.
Last week, AT&T sued the NAD over its attempt to block the carrier from running ads about T-Mobile’s repeated violations of NAD rules on deceptive ads, saying in court filings that the ad watchdog is ineffective (see 510300031).
