APHIS Adds El Salvador and Belize to List of Countries Affected by Screwworm
USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said El Salvador and Belize have been added to the list of regions it considers to be affected by the screwworm pest, according to a Federal Register notice released June 12. Their inclusions were effective Dec. 17, 2024, and Jan. 7, 2025, respectively.

The designation means that horses, swine, dogs and ruminants such as cows, sheep and goats are subject to APHIS import restrictions designed to mitigate the risk of introducing screwworm into the U.S., the agency said.
It also comes as U.S. officials have been working with Mexico counterparts to prevent the import of live cattle, horses and bison potentially affected by new world screwworm (see 2505120043).
