US Seeks Nearly $2M for Unpaid Duties on Chinese Garlic Imports

Surety company Aegis Security Insurance Co. owes nearly $2 million in unpaid duties on Chinese-origin fresh garlic, the U.S. said in a Feb. 28 complaint (United States v. Aegis Security Insurance Co., CIT # 25-00051).

The surety agent “knew or should have known” that the garlic’s importer, DMT International, was a new shipper and importing products that would be subject to antidumping duties, it said. But neither DMT nor Aegis paid the duties for DMT’s 28 garlic entries, it claimed.

It said CBP began requesting payment in 2019. It asked the court for damages amounting to $1,936,8000 and pre-judgment, equitable and post-judgment interest.
