The alliance is “a new coalition of companies united to set the bar for next generation video entertainment by establishing new standards to support innovation in video technologies including 4K and higher resolutions, high dynamic range, wider color gamut and immersive 3D audio,” the group said Monday (see 1501050023). Alliance members include DirecTV, Disney, Dolby Labs, Fox, LG, Netflix, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Warner. Samsung worked hard last year to “rapidly develop both the technology and the content that underpins the ‘superb’ UHD experience,” Stinziano said. But “we need to do more because frankly, not all the so-called UHD TVs provide the exceptional detail, color and depth that consumers should expect when they buy UHD,” he said.
The alliance, as “a partnership of industry leaders and TV manufacturers, Hollywood studios, post-production companies and content distributors,” will set “standards and guidelines across the UHD ecosystem,” Stinziano said. Fox Home Entertainment is “focused on breaking down barriers and innovating across our business so we can deliver richer movie experiences for the consumer that are deeply immersive,” President Mike Dunn said Monday. As an industry, “we're in a position to deliver consistently excellent viewing experiences at the home,” Dunn said. The alliance “will help consumers and content creators identify high-quality UHD technology,” he said. “This space is evolving rapidly with many features such as high resolution, high dynamic range, wider color gamut, immersive audio so that the UHD Alliance is a huge step forward for our industry. We look forward to working with the alliance to deliver the premium home entertainment experience that only true UHD offers."
The UHD Forum operating under the wing of the U.K.’s Digital TV Group (DTG) also hailed the formation in the U.S. of the UHD Alliance. The U.K. UHD Forum has brought together broadcasters, TV platforms, TV manufacturers and other stakeholders since 2013 as part of the DTG, it said Tuesday in a statement. "We welcome the formation of the UHD Alliance and we look forward to engaging with them to mutually develop standards for best practice in the 4K arena alongside some of the world’s greatest technology and entertainment companies,” said DTG CEO Richard Lindsay-Davies.
