Canadian Government Notices for March 9-11

  • Organic import compliance and enforcement. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is reminding members of the organic sector that the Organic Products Regulations Stream of Commerce and Enforcement Policy expires on June 30, 2011, and will be replaced by standard CFIA compliance and enforcement activities. These regulations apply to both domestic and imported products. (here)
  • U.S. tea recalled for possible Salmonella. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the Organic Peppermint Herbal Teas distributed by The Metropolitan Tea Company because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected teas have been recalled in the U.S. by Aromatics Inc. (here)
  • Listeria policy on ready-to-eat foods updated. Health Canada’s Policy on Listeria monocytogenes in Ready-To-Eat Foods was recently updated. The revised version will come into effect on April 1, 2011. It affects all ready-to-eat foods, including but not limited to meat, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. In the coming weeks, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will issue more detailed, program-specific information regarding compliance verification. (here)
  • AD rates for steel tubing from Korea, South Africa, Turkey. The Canada Border Services Agency has concluded a re-investigation of the normal values and export prices on certain steel structural tubing, also known as hollow structural sections, originating in or exported from Korea, South Africa and Turkey. All exporters were deemed to be non-cooperative and the normal values (antidumping duty rates) for all exporters will be based on the export price of the goods advanced by 89%, effective for the subject goods released from the CBSA on or after March 11, 2011.   • Hearing on pipe fittings AD/CV appeal. Canadian International Trade Tribunal will hold a public hearing on April 5, 2011 to consider the appeal under the Special Import Measures Act, regarding whether certain bronze and copper pipe fittings are subject to antidumping and countervailing duties.   • Environmental assessment for Morocco FTA. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade announces that the Government of Canada has recently launched negotiations towards a free trade agreement (FTA) with the Kingdom of Morocco, and it is now conducting an environmental assessment to inform these negotiations. Comments are invited on any likely and significant environmental impacts which this prospective FTA may have on Canada by May 13, 2011. (here)
  • Report on 2007-09 military exports. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has issued a report on exports of military goods from Canada 2007-2009. (here).
  • Updated list of EICS-eligible brokers. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has issued an updated list of Canadian customs that have access to the on-line permit application system - Export Import Controls System (EICS). (here).
  • Export/import controls website. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has updated the Web page, "About the Export and Import Controls Website," which states, among other things, that the Trade Controls & Technical Barriers Bureau (TID) is responsible for administering the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA). The Minister for International Trade provides policy direction in most areas involving market access and trade policy. (here)
