The Port of Oakland reports that six major U.S. West Coast ports and two western railroads came together at the World Shipping Summit (WSS) in Qingdao, China to announce their collaboration. The U.S. West Coast Collaboration (USWCC) is comprised of the major container-ports on the U.S. West Coast - Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Oakland, Long Beach, and Los Angeles - along with BNSF Railway Company and Union Pacific Railroad. The USWCC showcased the benefits of the U.S. West Coast as the premier region for trans-Pacific trade. 2. FMC to Meet on November 19th
The Federal Maritime Commission will hold a partially open meeting on November 19, 2009 in Washington, DC. Agenda items for the open portion include (1) Docket No. 09-02: Notice of Proposed Rulemaking - Repeal of Marine Terminal Agreement Exemption, and (2) Discussion of Notice of Inquiry Concerning Ocean Transportation Intermediary Agents. 3. FMC Corrects Error in Order Saying OTIs Can Use Unlicensed Persons as Agents
The Federal Maritime Commission has issued a correction notice to add omitted words to its order affirming that it is lawful for a licensed OTI to engage an unlicensed person to act as its agent to perform OTI services on behalf of the disclosed licensed OTI. The corrected sentence now reads (added words underlined): "The Court concluded, '[T]he Commission has no authority to require agents of OFFs who are not themselves OFFs to obtain OFF licenses just as it has no authority to require agents of NVOCCs who are not themselves NVOCCs to obtain NVOCC licenses." 4. Statement, Declaration, and Fact Sheet from APEC Meeting Posted
The White House has posted a statement by the leaders from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting on November 14-15, 2009 in which they pledged to take a more comprehensive approach to regional economic integration to keep up with new trends in cross-border trade and investment. 5. ECHA Offers Recorded Webinar on REACH Registration
The European Chemicals Agency has announced that companies preparing registrations under the REACH program for chemical substances can now watch a recorded presentation of a webinar on "Preparing and submitting a registration dossier" on the ECHA website.
