2. FSIS Posts Report of the U.S. Delegate Codex Alimentarius Commission - 32nd Session
The Food Safety and Inspection Service has posted the report of the U.S. delegation to the 32nd Session (2009) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which was held June 29-July 4, 2009, in Rome. The session was notable for having substantive discussions on all the agenda items and significant output. 3. FTC Settlement Bars Seller's Deceptive 'Biodegradable' Claims
Dyna-E International, a retailer of Lightload brand rayon compressed dry towels, will be barred from making false claims that mislead consumers into thinking that its products are "biodegradable" under a proposed settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. 4. Applications for 2011 International Buyer Program Being Accepted
The International Trade Administration has issued a notice setting forth objectives, procedures and application review criteria associated with support for domestic trade shows by the International Buyer Program (IBP). This announcement covers selection for International Buyer Program participation for calendar year 2011. Applications must be received by October 27, 2009. 5. Energy Dept Informal Meeting on Clothes Washer Energy Standards
The Energy Department of will hold an informal public meeting on September 21, 2009 in Washington, DC to discuss and receive comments on issues that it will address in its rulemaking proceeding to establish energy conservation standards for residential clothes washers. DOE also encourages written comments by September 28, 2009 on any subject within the scope of the proceeding. 6. Defense Trade Advisory Group Seeks New Members for 2010-2012 Term
The State Department has issued a press release announcing that the Defense Trade Advisory Group (DTAG), a panel that provides advice to the U.S. Government on defense trade policy and regulations, is now accepting membership applications for the upcoming 2010-2012 term. According to the press release, with the recent White House announcement of a new government-wide initiative to review the export control process, membership on this panel presents an opportunity to participate in better aligning the export control process with today's national security challenges. 7. NAM Launches Media Campaign Opposing Waxman-Markey Climate Change Bill
The National Association of Manufacturers has launched a multi-state, multi-million-dollar comprehensive advertising campaign opposing the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454), also known as the Waxman-Markey climate change bill. Joining the NAM in this effort is the National Federation of Independent Business, along with several state manufacturing associations. 8. National Foreign Trade Council Launches New Trade and Climate Working Group
The National Foreign Trade Council has announced the launch of a new Trade and Climate Working Group which will focus on trade and competitiveness-related aspects of U.S. and global climate policies. 9. China Pledges Cooperation on Climate Change, Bilateral Trade
The Chinese Government has announced that it is seeking to step up cooperation with other developing nations including Mexico to address climate change while maintaining economic growth. The Chinese Ambassador to Mexico stated that China hopes to tackle the issue with Mexico and others at the upcoming G20 summit at the end of September 2009. 10. China's Legislature Endorses Climate Change Resolution
China's top legislature approved a resolution on climate change, ahead of an international conference in December in Copenhagen, Denmark. The resolution of "actively dealing with climate change" was endorsed by lawmakers at the closing meeting of a four-day session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature. 11. Millennium Challenge Corp Meeting on FY 2010 Country Selection
The Millennium Challenge Corporation will hold a meeting on September 9, 2009 to initiate the fiscal year 2010 country selection process by identifying countries that will be candidates for Millennium Challenge Account assistance in FY 2010 based on the per capita income and other requirements of the Millennium Challenge Act of 2003 and to discuss other Compact development efforts with MCA-eligible countries; the MCC's Threshold Program; and consider certain administrative matters. 12. CPSC Scheduled to Vote by Aug 27th on Whether to Give Industry Add'l 90 Days to File Report on Youth Bicycle Stay
Consumer Product Safety Commission staff have requested that the CPSC Commissioners vote by August 27, 2009 on whether to give the bicycle industry additional time to file a report on metal component parts accessible to children and the measurement of lead content based on representative samples of each part. The request would extend the due date for filing the report to October 9, 2009 (from August 29, 2009). The report is required by the CPSC's stay of enforcement of the lead content limits for certain parts of bicycles and related products designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger.
