American Shipper reports that a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection cargo and conveyance security official stated that CBP wants Canada to strengthen its Partners in Protection program to be more in line with the U.S. C-TPAT program to help with mutual recognition of those programs. CBP would like Canada to dedicate more staff to verify that corporate security plans meet basic criteria, more clearly define its security criteria, and conduct on-site assessments to check that supply chain security practices are followed according to the corporate plan. The Journal of Commerce reports that this year, China is likely to overtake Japan as the third largest market for U.S. products, according to the U.S.-China Business Council. When that happens, only Canada and Mexico will be larger markets for the U.S. (JoC, dated 06/04/07, www.joc.com)

3. NIST Establishes Postal Box for Fastener Insignia Document Submission

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued a final rule in conjunction with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, effective June 4, 2007, to implement the Fastener Quality Act of 1999 to provide that all documents submitted in connection with the recordal of fastener insignia must be mailed to a particular postal box maintained by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
