1. FDA Adds Product Code for Wheat Gluten Intended for Animal Food
New code added. FDA states it has created a new product code industry/class combination of 71M (byproducts for animal foods, wheat and wheat byproducts).
The following new product code for wheat gluten has been added: "71MY[ ]01." FDA states that when using the new product code, the 5th character in the code should be filled with the appropriate process industry code (PIC).
FDA notes there are also two existing codes for wheat gluten intended for use in human food:
- [ ][ ]06 Wheat flour, gluten
- [ ][ ]08 Gluten, wheat
The appropriate subclass and PIC codes for industry 02 should be filled in.
For transmission of entries containing wheat gluten, determine intended use. FDA is requesting that those transmitting entries to FDA which contain wheat gluten first determine the intended use, and then select the appropriate product code.
FDA further asks that filers discontinue the use of all other product codes previously transmitted for wheat gluten intended for use in animal foods.
(FDA sources have stated by phone a new product code was created to help distinguish between imports of wheat gluten for human consumption and imports for animal foods.)
