According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources, if Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) members did not update their account information in the mandatory C-TPAT Internet Application and Communications Portal (referred to as the C-TPAT Security Link Portal) by the October 1, 2006 deadline, their application was considered withdrawn and all C-TPAT benefits were removed. 2. APHIS Proposes to Change Foot-and-Mouth Disease & Rinderpest Status of Patagonia South Region of Argentina
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has issued a proposed rule that would amend 9 CFR Part 94 to add that portion of the Patagonia region of Argentina located south of latitude 42&730; south (Patagonia South) to the list of regions considered free of rinderpest and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). APHIS also proposes to add Patagonia South to the list of regions that are subject to certain import restrictions on meat and meat products because of their proximity to or trading relationships with rinderpest- or FMD-affected countries. APHIS will consider all comments received on or before March 6, 2007. 3. APHIS Proposes to Remove Pre-Export Tuberculosis and Brucellosis Testing Requirements for Certain Cattle
APHIS has issued a proposed rule that would amend 9 CFR Part 91 to eliminate the requirement for pre-export tuberculosis and brucellosis testing of certain cattle being exported to countries that do not require such testing. APHIS will consider all comments received on or before March 12, 2007. 4. FDA Posts Various Notices to its Web Site
The FDA has posted the following notices to its Web site:
FDA to issue a proposed rule to update health claims for calcium, Vitamin D, & osteoporosis. FDA has issued a news release announcing that it is proposing to allow new claims on foods and dietary supplements containing calcium and Vitamin D to show their potential to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. The proposed rule would allow manufacturers to include new information on their food and supplement labeling and to eliminate certain other information. FDA closer to identifying source of E. coli contamination associated with Taco John's restaurants. The FDA has issued a news release announcing that that it has moved closer to identifying the source of illness for the Taco John E. coli outbreak. FDA and the state of California, working in conjunction with state health officials in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, have DNA-matched the strain of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria associated with the outbreak with two environmental samples gathered from dairy farms near a lettuce growing area in California's Central Valley.
