The Journal of Commerce (JoC) has conducted a reader survey on post-9/11 supply chain security progress. Among other things, JoC asked its readers about Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) benefits. The magazine reports that 46% of certified and validated C-TPAT members have fewer inspections, 41% have experienced faster release of cargo at U.S. ports, 31% have received no benefits, and 12% cited other benefits received as a result of C-TPAT membership. 2. Mexico Re-Opens Market to U.S. Dairy Heifers
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a press release announcing that on October 4, 2006 Mexico agreed to resume trade in U.S. dairy heifers that are under 24 months of age and registered with a purebred dairy breed association or the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, a national dairy producer cooperative. Mexico had closed its market to U.S. dairy heifers following the December 2003 discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as mad cow disease) in Washington state. 3. President Bush Supports Turkey's Bid to Join the EU
According to a State Department press release, the President has expressed his support for Turkey's entrance into the European Union (EU) during a meeting with that country's prime minister on October 2, 2006. The President also discussed with the Turkish prime minister, among other things, Turkey's progress and reforms with regards to the EU.
